OUR MISSION: to serve the public, the Board of Supervisors, County departments, and County employees in a manner that is honest, ethical, forthright and respectful; to provide assistance in obtaining Board information and access to public records which fall under the jurisdiction of the Clerk of the Board.
Butte County was among California's original 27 counties. Created in 1850, the County's first governing board convened on June 5, 1854, and at the time was known as the Court of Sessions. The Court of Sessions was headed by a judge and considered civil actions and general business of the County. On May 7, 1855, the first Board of Supervisors meeting was convened and our current form of governing body was created with the election of the first Board of Supervisors' Chair, R.B. Moore.
Butte County derives its name from the Marysville or Sutter Buttes, which lay within the County boundaries at the time of its creation. Butte County currently comprises 1,677 square miles approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. A predominantly agricultural county, Butte County contains the five incorporated cities or towns of Biggs, Chico, Gridley, Oroville and Paradise, and as of the 2000 census, has a population of 203,171.
The County Board of Supervisors is the governing body for the County and special districts within the County. It exercises the legislative, administrative, and appellate powers prescribed to it by the California State Constitution and Statutes, as well as the Butte County Charter.
