The Fire Prevention Bureau of CAL FIRE/Butte County Fire Department is an eight member, full spectrum bureau with specialists in the areas of Fire Investigation, Criminal Law Enforcement, Public Education, Public Information, Weed Abatement, Pre-fire Planning, Fire Protection Planning, and Life Safety Code Enforcement.

In addition to their specialist duties, six members of the bureau, including the bureau chief, are regularly assigned investigators who respond to calls involving undetermined, suspicious and arson fires, as well as fires involving serious injury or death and/or high value loss.

The investigators are active members of the Butte County Arson Task Force, which is composed of representatives from all of the fire departments in the county, the District Attorney’s Office, and CAL FIRE/Butte County Fire Department.  Members of the Task Force respond to calls upon request from represented jurisdictions as needed.  The represented jurisdictions are the County of Butte , the Cities of Gridley, Biggs, Oroville, Paradise, Chico , and El Medio Fire Protection District. CAL FIRE/Butte County Fire Department has the largest number of personnel assigned to the Arson Task Force. 

The Butte County Arson Task Force is called out for complex fires in the represented jurisdictions that have a high dollar loss, appear to be suspicious or arson and or a loss of life.
