The Training and Safety Bureau provides staff service and support to the Butte Unit in both the fields of training and safety for all career and volunteer firefighters.

The Training and Safety Bureau has a Battalion Chief, two Fire Captains and an Office Assistant assigned to the bureau. The Battalion Chief and Fire Captains respond to all types of incidents where they function as incident safety officers, additional command officers and have technical expertise in fields such as rescue.

Firefighting is a very dangerous and demanding job that requires split second life, death and property conservation decisions.  Firefighters must be able to quickly assess a situation, develop a plan and execute the plan regardless of the type of emergency.  The Training and Safety Bureau helps firefighters perform their work safer and more efficiently.  Many federal and state statutes regulate the business of firefighting, rescue and EMS.  Consequently, the Training and Safety Bureau must be well informed and ready to provide comprehensive and accurate training and safety information to firefighters.

The Training Officers are responsible for developing firefighter skill proficiency courses, presenting courses, conducting practice-training drills and evaluating firefighter performance.  As much as is possible, the Bureau uses nationally or state certified courses to ensure that firefighters meet all required standards.  Examples of certified courses include the basic Firefighter I and Firefighter II training, Emergency Medical Technician and First Responder courses, technical rescue classes such as Rescue Systems I, Confined Space Rescue Awareness, Trench Rescue and Swift Water Rescue classes.  In addition to formal classroom and field training courses, firefighters must constantly practice their skills. Generally, firefighters drill on the average about two hours per workday.  The training officers provide training and drills to all Unit career and volunteer firefighters.
