Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping has been a problem in Butte County for numerous years, and the Public Works Department has moved into a position of being proactive with the adoption of Chapter 49 of the Code of Butte County.

The Ordinance created a “Cradle to the Grave” determination for solid waste. “It’s your trash and you're responsible to see that it is disposed of legally." Illegal dumping became a Misdemeanor Offense, and the County established  an Administrative Order/Hearing Process to minimize the impact on the courts. Fines of $100, $200, and $300 were implemented and a Hearing Officer/Appeal Process was put into place.

2006 saw a 78% reduction in the number of illegal dumping sites in the County. The program appears to be very successful.

Report illegal dumping to (866) 369-3867 (DUMP).
